What are the advantages of a sand filter over a cartridge filter?
A sand filter is more effective at keeping the water clear as it will catch both large and small particles. Furthermore, it is necessary to have a pump and sand filter set in order to run an air source heat pump (a cartridge filter pump does not have a sufficient flow rate).
What is Aqualoon?
Aqualoon is an alternative to filter sand and sits in the sand filter barrel instead of the sand. The light- weight, polyethylene fibre balls have a high filtration capacity and are easier to move/ clean as required.
What is the best way to heat your pool?
We would recommend the use of an air source heat pump for efficient heating of your pool water (whatever the weather!). For every 1KW of energy consumed, the heat pump produces 4-5KW heat energy, thereby keeping running costs down.
How does an air source heat pump work?
The heat pump uses the ambient air temperature to ‘excite’ a refrigerant enclosed within the unit. The temperature of the refrigerant is raised, generating heat in the process. Water is diverted through the heat pump and the temperature of the water will be raised to the temperature set.
Can I use multiple heating methods?
Yes. For example, you could use solar panels in conjunction with an air source heat pump, thus utilising free energy from the sun and reducing running costs.
What size heat pump do I need?
This depends on the size of your swimming pool- contact us to confirm.
Please note- a larger heat pump will not get the water any warmer, but it will get it up to temperature faster and running costs may be reduced.
What are the electrical requirements for a pump and sand filter?
We recommend it is plugged into a 13A external waterproof socket. If in doubt, contact a qualified electrician.
What are the electrical requirements for a heat pump?
Heaters up to 12.5KW, use 2.5KW of electricity and can run off a 16A supply. This should be an RCD protected, waterproof, fused spur. We recommend that the heat pump is installed by a qualified electrician.
What are the running costs of a heat pump?
This varies depending on several factors including electricity tariff, pool volume, heat loss from the pool and ambient air temperature. Running costs on an air source heat pump are significantly less than a standard electric heater, (although the upfront cost may be more).
What temperature can I set the heat pump to?
The heat pump can be set to 30°C, but for general use, the ideal temperature is 28°C.
Where should the pump and sand filter be located? Can it be enclosed?
The pump is gravity fed and should be situated below the skimmer box. Remember you need to be able to easily access the pump and sand filter for maintenance reasons. If installing the pool in ground, you may need to incorporate a hatch for access. The pump and sand filter can be kept in a filtration enclosure.
Where should the heat pump be located? Can it be enclosed?
The heat pump should be located outside and must have at least 3m clearance (no obstructions!) in front of the fan. It should have around 0.5m clear air space at the back and sides.
How does the water flow through the system?
The water leaves the pool via the skimmer, is diverted through the pump and sand filter, through the heating method (if applicable) and back into the pool via the inlet. Note- the heat pump does not actually ‘pump’ the water, the flow is provided by the swimming pool pump.
Which is the inlet and outlet on the heat pump?
Water goes into the heat pump on the bottom fitting (from the pump and sand filter) and out at the top fitting (back to the pool).
Can you bypass the heat pump?
Yes- this is possible with a bypass kit.
How can I retain heat in the pool?
If the pool is in-ground, make sure to insulate the sides. Cover the pool with a solar bubble cover (when not in use) and use wind breaks to minimise wind blowing over surface of the water.
How do I back wash the sand filter?
There is a setting on your handle on the sand filter marked as ‘Back Wash’. Always turn the pump off before you move the handle. Consult the manual for more detail.
How do I clean the Aqualoon?
The Aqualoon can be removed from the sand filter, placed in a net bag, and washed in a washing machine.
How do I set the timer on the heat pump?
It is not recommended to set the timer on the heat pump. Should you wish for the heat pump to come on and off and different times, it is recommended to put a timer on the swimming pool pump.
Are the sand filter pump and heat pump running all the time?
Yes- except for when the pool is in use. If you wish to have them on a timer- contact us to discuss how to do this.
What do I do with the heat pump and sand filter during winter?
The heat pump, swimming pool pump and sand filter should be cleaned, drained down and either left outside or stored away in a shed or garage. They must all be thoroughly drained to prevent frost damage.
Why is my heat pump freezing up?
The heat pump expels cold air and when there is not enough clearance in front of the fan, this can bounce back and cause the unit to freeze up. Ensure there is at least 3m clearance in front of the fan.
Why is water leaking from the bottom of the heat pump?
During hot and humid days, the heater may discharge large quantities of water from the base. This is condensation from the compressor and is normal.
I am getting error EE3, what does this mean and how can I fix it?
EE3 is a flow fail and will occur when there is insufficient water flow through the heater.
Check the pool pump is on and wait a few minutes for the heat pump to recognise the flow. Make sure the water is half way up the skimmer box, the skimmer box is clear and the vacuum plate has not been left in (you should be able to see an empty basket, free of debris, when you look inside the skimmer). Check your connections to the heat pump are correct (in at the bottom and out at the top).
Contact us if you still have this issue after conducting the above checks.
The heat pump is causing my electrics to trip, why is this?
If the heat pump has been installed correctly and the electrical requirements met, this should not happen. It should be hard wired into an RCD protected, waterproof, fused spur. Please check with a qualified electrician if you are unsure.
